Research Accomplishments

This year, AQMEL researchers published seven papers! Jennifer's paper explores the chemical complexity of organic aerosols associated with indoor incense burning. Dr. Ivey led a commentary on the challenges of disparate exposure mitigation in disproportionately impacted communities. Khanh's paper explored the utility of machine learning for air pollution predictions in southern California during the COVID-19 shutdown. Findings from the community-led effort in West San Bernardino were published in Dr. Ivey's ERL Focus Issue (Torres et al). Other papers feature findings from impactful collaborative studies. See our "Research" page for an overview of lab thrusts and the associated publications.

AQMEL Milestones

We congratulate Cam and Duncan on advancing to Ph.D. candidacy this year! This is a pivotal milestone on the pathway to doctoral degree completion. Stay tuned for publications from their in-progress dissertations. AQMEL researcher Ayah Hassan will complete the program requirements for an M.S. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering this fall! Next year, she will begin a position as an air quality principal at the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

Conference Activity

Duncan and Cam gave oral presentations at the Community Modeling and Analysis System meeting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina (Oct 2024). Their talks were titled, "GPU Implementation of a Gas-Phase Chemistry Solver in the CMAQ Chemical Transport Model" and "Impacts of Chemical Mechanism Choice and Meteorology on Model Processes and Wintertime PM2.5 Modeling in the Western U.S.," respectively. They also caught up with AQMEL alum, Dr. Khanh Do, who is a postdoctoral researcher at Northeastern University.

Community Outreach

AQMEL researchers participated in a number of exciting community outreach events this year. Explore the photo gallery below for a glimpse of those activities!
