This spring and summer we bid farewell to five AQMEL trainees! Assistant Professor Abiola Lawal will join the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Connecticut in the fall as the principal investigator of the Urban Systems Modeling lab. Congratulations Professor Lawal!
In June, Dr. Khanh Do received his doctoral degree in chemical and environmental engineering from UC Riverside. His dissertation was titled, "Computational and Geo-Spatial Approaches to Investigate Multi-Scale Air Quality Trends in Southern California." His papers on personal exposures and machine learning for ozone are available for reading, and other works are currently in progress! He is now a postdoctoral scholar at Northeastern University in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Congratulations Dr. Do!
Undergraduate researchers Charlotte Mourad, April Zhang, and Andrea Delgado graduated with B.S. degrees in civil engineering, sustainable environmental design/data science, and environmental sciences, respectively! Charlotte is continuing her work in environmental advocacy. While working with AQMEL, she received the Young Climate Leaders of Color Fellowship, hosted by the People's Climate Innovation Center. April will start in the Harvard University data science master's program in the fall. Andrea is continuing as a researcher at UC Riverside. While working with AQMEL, she participated in two NASA internships, SARP and DEVELOP. Congratulations to Charlotte, April, and Andrea!
Several fellowships were received over the past year. Jennifer received the Lau Fellowship in Climate Equity and Environmental Justice and the Climate Neutrality Initiative Fellowship. Zoe received the SURF Fellowship for summer research. Migdalia received the LSAMP/CAMP Scholarship, which supported her summer research under Jennifer's guidance. Incoming PhD students also received awards that will commence in the fall. Ivette will receive the UC Berkeley Climate Equity and Environmental Justice seed grant for research on environmental injustices in California. Sophie will receive the UC Berkeley Chancellor's Fellowship. Sumu was awarded the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, and her award was featured in Berkeley CEE student news. Congratulations to all awardees!
We welcome new undergraduate researchers Mara, Peri, and Christopher to AQMEL! Mara leads BenMAP modeling and analysis with Professor Lawal. Peri is leading the Davis Hall indoor air quality project. Christopher leads community engagement research for the EPA wildfire project. We also thank high school volunteers Anusha and Ishaan for their contributions to the EPA project this summer!
Dr. Ivey will serve as an Early Career Board member for the new journal ES&T Air. She is also the 2023 Health Related Aerosols Chair for the American Association for Aerosol Research. She won the Women in Science Incentive Prize for air quality research in December of 2022, and she was a featured scholar for the Sloan Scholars Mentoring Network in June.
Congratulations to all AQMEL graduates and awardees, and we wish you the best of luck with all new ventures!
Congratulations, AQMEL!
